Capstone Secures C600 Order From Sarlin Oy Ab for First C600 Landfill Project in Finland

CHATSWORTH, Calif., July 31, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Capstone Turbine Corporation (www.capstoneturbine.com) (Nasdaq:CPST), the world's leading clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, announced today that it received its first order for a Capstone C600 to be utilized in a landfill project in Jyvaskyla, Finland.

Jyvaskylan Energia, a local energy company, sought a power generation solution that could operate on the gas from its landfill. In assessing their options, they required a low maintenance option that could operate reliably in the cold harsh environment. They also required a combined heat and power (CHP) solution that could utilize the thermal energy from the exhaust to provide district heating.

Located less than 600km from the Arctic Circle, Jyvaskylan Energia needed a rugged and reliable power generation option with proven operating experience in similar conditions. They also needed the equipment to be modular so that it could be easily expanded in the future to accommodate a growth in the output of gas from the landfill. Additionally, they required equipment that could operate on gas with low methane content. The Capstone C600 microturbine provides the perfect solution.

The gas from the landfill is filtered and dried before entering two large compressors that feed the C600 microturbine. The electricity generated is sold directly to the utility. The thermal exhaust energy is captured with an 850kW heat exchanger in a CHP application for district heating.

Sarlin Oy Ab, Capstone's exclusive distributor in Finland, engineered this full turnkey solution. The unmanned turbine plant will be monitored and controlled 24/7 from the Jyvaskylan Energia remote control room. The site is expected to be commissioned in the Spring of 2015.

"Utilizing the Capstone microturbine in landfill gas solutions demonstrates how we provide clean, reliable, and cost-effective power generation solutions to the renewable energy market," stated Jim Crouse, Capstone's Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "With this demonstrated success, an increasing number of landfills across the world are turning to Capstone microturbines as their preferred clean and green energy solution."
