CNBC Live Interview with Darren Jamison, President & CEO of Capstone Turbine Corporation

CNBC's "After Hours Action" team interviewed Capstone President and CEO Darren Jamison live on April 19, 2012 about the impact of the country's expanding shale plays and abundant natural gas supply on Capstone's growth.

The CNBC interviewer noted, "You (Capstone) came to the attention of the producers because you seem to be getting orders left, right, and center."

Jamison noted that Capstone is growing 30 percent year over year.

"With record low natural gas prices, we can produce energy for a customer at about three cents per kilowatt hour," Jamison said. "They can have free energy for heating, cooling, or processed steam. It's a great opportunity for customers to manage their energy costs and control their future."

One interview said, "A number of my friends on Twitter, including Real Fly, have said just recently that you're really knocking the ball out of the park and they're very impressed with how well the shale is playing for you guys. A lot of these shale plays are kicking off a lot of the natural gas that you're then using right there on site, right?"

"Absolutely," Jamison stated. "They've got natural gas onsite. With natural gas prices, why buy power from the utility when they can use their own product onsite and have the same reliability or better with our technology?"

He also stated that several large oil and gas developers, including Marathon, Anadarko, Pioneer, and Chesapeake, have installed Capstone clean-and-green microturbines throughout shale plays across the United States.

"The word is spreading very quickly for Capstone," Jamison said.

Capstone Receives Order For 12 C65 Dual-Mode ICHP Microturbines from The New York Palace Luxury Hotel

Capstone Turbine Corporation distributor RSP Systems recently secured an order with The New York Palace for 12 C65 dual-mode ICHP microturbines that will provide prime and backup power to the large luxury hotel in midtown New York City.

The natural gas combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) application will deepen the green hotel’s commitment to environmental responsibility by reducing emissions equivalent to removing 186 cars from the road.

When commissioned this winter, the system will displace a large portion of the customer’s district steam and electric cooling, and offset a portion of grid power at the massive 55-story, 1.2 million-square-foot tower. The 780kW CCHP system will supply an estimated 35 percent of facility space heating in the winter, 15 percent of space cooling in the summer, and 42 percent electricity year round.

The project was funded by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), a government organization that supports businesses that take steps—like installing Capstone microturbines—to help meet New York’s energy goals.

Executives from RSP Systems, Capstone’s New York distributor that secured the order, believe the clean energy project will set an example for other large-scale facilities. “The Capstone microturbine array will become a showcase project demonstrating how buildings with expensive utility rates can integrate a CCHP system to lower overall energy costs and ensure high reliability while also benefiting the environment,” said Cory Glick, RSP Systems’ President.

“The New York Palace is thrilled to be at the forefront of microturbine installations at hotels nationwide and we’re proud to help New York City become a more ecological and sustainable city,” said David Chase, General Manager of The New York Palace. “This new technology will help reduce energy used by the hotel each day and decrease energy costs, which makes a more pleasant and eco-friendly stay for our valued guests.”

“Capstone CCHP technology has great potential to alleviate stress on New York’s electric grid,” said Jim Crouse, Capstone’s Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “NYSERDA recognizes Capstone microturbines can play a key role in helping New York meet its goals to reduce energy consumption and protect the environment, and awards companies willing to deploy natural-gas burning clean energy systems for onsite power."

Capstone Expands Microturbine Installations in Hospitals with C600 Sale in Italy

Capstone's Italian distributor IBT Group recently sold a clean-and-green C600 Power Package to a leading Italian hospital facility management company.

The microturbine will be installed at the enormous, 600-bed Versilia Hospital in Lido di Camaiore in a combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) application to lower emissions, increase energy efficiency, and ensure reliable power generation.

In this first-of-its-kind application, the C600 will generate 600kW of onsite electricity. In addition, thermal power from the system will produce 630 kg/hr of steam that will create 400kW of hot water for the 70,000-square-meter (230,000-square-foot) hospital. The C600 will be commissioned in June. Officials expect an absorption chiller will be added to the system later this year.

Capstone microturbines were selected over reciprocating engines even though the hospital has an existing engine-based CHP system. Hospital officials chose the low-emission and highly reliable Capstone microturbine because of its ability to easily make steam and integrate with existing hospital energy systems.

IBT Group expects a total annual savings of 360 tons of oil equivalent (TOE) and a 1,000 ton reduction of carbon dioxide each year.

"This C600 project is a milestone for us since the Capstone microturbine will be the first in Italy installed in such a cutting-edge hospital," said Ilario Vigani, IBT Group CEO. "In addition to hospitals, we have many industrial customers looking at this solution and we expect it will be very popular."

"We continue to pioneer new microturbine applications, especially in markets that rely on low-emission, reliable power like hospitals," said Jim Crouse, Capstone's Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "More customers are finding steam generation a viable solution with our microturbines. Capstone microturbines enable seamless integration with existing steam systems, which reduces installation costs and allows for flexible and efficient utilization of turbine exhaust energy."

Linda Sánchez Launches Clean Energy Jobs Plan

Chatsworth, CA – Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) today unveiled a creative plan to create jobs and promote American energy efficiency and independence by announcing the “American Microturbine Manufacturing and Clean Energy Deployment Act” (H.R. 3394). The recently introduced legislation would give producers of microturbine technology the same tax credits other renewable and fuel cell technologies receive. Microturbines are clean energy systems that provide a low-emission, uninterrupted power supply and help control energy costs.

“This legislation builds on the great American tradition of innovation and manufacturing, but, most importantly, it will help our country create new high-paying jobs,” said Congresswoman Sánchez. “On top of that, this bill helps promote investment in the clean energy economy and reduces air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.  Microturbines produce efficient thermal energy and clean electrical power, and it’s about time that microturbine technology joins solar power and wind power in the national conversation for clean energy solutions.”

The “American Microturbine Manufacturing and Clean Energy Deployment Act” would amend the current tax code to establish a 30% investment tax credit for microturbines, putting it on par with other renewable technologies. By advancing smart tax policy and smart regulations to help businesses expand and grow, H.R. 3394 would enable American microturbine producers to triple their domestic manufacturing. Industry experts estimate that this tax credit could create over 2,000 new jobs almost immediately. Additionally, enough new microturbines could be put into use during the first year of the tax credit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 170,000 tons of Carbon Dioxide.

Congresswoman Sánchez unveiled her clean energy jobs plan during a tour of Capstone Turbine Corporation’s facilities in Chatsworth, CA. Capstone manufactures low-emission microturbine systems, which are used by companies, hospitals, landfills, manufacturers, oil-and-gas sites and more across California and worldwide.

“Capstone Turbine Corporation is the world’s leading manufacturer of clean microturbine energy systems. We are honored to host Congresswoman Sanchez at our factory today, and we applaud her support for American manufacturing, clean energy, and energy efficiency,” said Darren Jamison, President and CEO of Capstone Turbine Corporation. “H.R. 3394 will grow the domestic market for microturbines, which today are manufactured almost exclusively in the United States, but are sold predominantly overseas. If this bill passes, more American businesses will be able to generate their own electricity and thermal energy onsite, saving those businesses money but also strengthening energy security and reducing pollution.”

Microturbines are an American-invented technology. 90% of the world’s microturbines are manufactured right in the United States. Additionally, microturbines can reach 90% energy efficiency.

Greenvironment receives initial orders from a renowned oil and gas producer

Berlin, 13th September 2011 - Greenvironment GmbH, a 100% subsidiary of Greenvironment Plc (WKN: A0YEKX / Symbol: GIV) has received orders from a well-known oil and gas producer to build two 200kW microturbine CHP plants in Germany.

In the extraction of crude oil there is always a gaseous mixture of a wide variety of hydrocarbons (associated petroleum gas - APG). The client now intends to convert those gas volumes that accrue in its oil and gas fields into electricity as well as heat by using microturbines and thus to ensure an energetic usage.

Greenvironment is building a pilot plant that should prove that quantity fluctuating gas volumes, whose composition is variable, can be effective energetically used in microturbines. These microturbines of one performance class will be operated unitized or as a power block. By changing the gas composition is also intended to determine which application scope is possible and accordingly at what effort present gas can be changed so that it can be used in microturbines. The generated electricity is primarily used for the operation of the plant. Excess electricity is fed into the grid of the local utility. The thermal energy will be used as process heat.

Matti Malkamäki, CEO of Greenvironment Plc, said: "These initial orders from a major oil and gas producer in Germany are of enormous importance for Greenvironment because it opens up many new opportunities - especially in the oil and gas sector. I am firmly convinced that our microturbine CHP plants will stand the pilot test."

"Though these are German projects, it gives us a lot of know-how about how the turbines can be used on associated petroleum gas. We have a number of similar cases waiting, not only in Germany but in Poland and Romania as an example, where similar needs do exist. The total number of possible plant sites in in our countries of operation is more than 100", adds Matti Malkamäki.

President Barack Obama Salutes Capstone Turbine Corporation in Weekly Address

On March 19, 2011, President Barack Obama acknowledged Capstone Turbine Corporation’s contribution to America’s accelerating economic growth in his Weekly Address “American Jobs Through Exports to Latin America.” From Washington DC, Obama declared that Capstone’s exports to Latin America support American jobs.

“In 2010, America's exports to Brazil supported more than 250,000 American jobs,” Obama said. “These are jobs at places like Capstone Turbine Corporation in California, which recently sold US$2 million worth of high-tech energy equipment to Brazil.”

President Barack Obama referenced the order for three C800 Powe Packages for a large wastewater treatment plant in Brazil that supported the country's efforts to continuously improve water quality and diversify its energy supplies beyond hydroelectric.

Obama reported that as Latin America’s economy rapidly grows, so does its demand for goods and services. “As President, I want to make sure these products are made in America. I want to open more markets around the world so that American companies can do more business and hire more of our people. Every US$1 billion of goods and services we export supports more than 5,000 jobs in the United States. So, the more we sell overseas, the more jobs we create on our shores. That's why, last year, I set a goal for this country: to double our exports by 2014. And it's a goal we're on track to meet.”

“Capstone Turbine Corporation is a homegrown energy company that employs approximately 200 highly skilled American workers in our manufacturing facilities outside of Los Angeles,” said Jim Crouse, Capstone’s Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We produce approximately 80% of the world’s microturbines. Most of the balance is also manufactured in the United States, making microturbines a unique American manufacturing success story. This is not a product that we are buying from China; China is buying it from us.”

WELTEC BIOPOWER orders first Greenvironment plant for large biogas park in Barsikow

WELTEC BIOPOWER orders first Greenvironment plant for large biogas park in Barsikow

  • 1st installation of a microturbine plant in the field of biomethane upgrading
  • Long-term technology cooperation with WELTEC BIOPOWER

Berlin, 17th January 2011 – WELTEC BIOPOWER GmbH, the world market leader in the production of stainless steel biogas plants, has placed an order for the first microturbine combined heat and power plant from Greenvironment GmbH, a 100% subsidiary of Greenvironment plc.

Greenvironment will install a CHP plant with a CR600-microturbine and the SCADA system for remote monitoring in a large biogas park (24,000-square-meters) in Barsikow (Brandenburg), about 100 kilometers to the west of Berlin. Based on the input materials corn, whole crop silage and dry chicken manure 8.4 million standard cubic meters of biogas and 3 million standard cubic meters of biomethane will be produced here annually starting in the summer of 2011.

In this biogas project, microturbines are combined with a biogas upgrading plant. The thermal energy contained in the exhaust stream of the microturbine is used as process heat for the biogas upgrading plant. The treatment is based on the principle of chemical wash (amine scrubbing). The goal is a self-sufficient process heat supply of the upgrading plant by a head load controlled CHP with integrated microturbines. The generated electricity is fed into the grid of the local utility. The amount corresponds to an electrical capacity of 2.2 megawatts.

"During the processing of biomethane, the process energy (water) needs to have a temperature of 140 degrees Celsius. Therefore microturbines offer a clear competitive advantage thanks to their high thermal efficiency, which helps us to significantly increase the overall economics of the biomethane production", says Robert Tholen, technical director of WELTEC BIOPOWER. Further advantages are the compact and modular design of the package that can be upgraded as needed.

"Greenvironment has quickly developed solutions that have all facilitated a good connection to the existing biogas upgrading plant", Robert Tholen stated the reason for awarding the contract to the Berlin-based technology specialist.

"This initial contract by WELTEC BIOPOWER is a good start into 2011. In addition to that, negotiations with other clients regarding further major contracts are also well advanced. Therefore we expect a significant jump in revenues this year", commented Radu Anghel, managing director of Greenvironment GmbH.
